Is AI Music Copyrighted? Commercial Rights & Platform Rules

As AI music generators become more advanced, creators want to know: who owns the rights? Can I upload my AI tracks to Spotify and monetize them?

1. Can You Copyright AI Music?

Under current legal frameworks in major jurisdictions (like the US, EU, and China), purely AI-generated content cannot be copyrighted. Copyright requires "human authorship."

However, if you significantly edit, mix, add human vocals, or write the lyrics yourself, the human contribution can be protected.

2. Commercial Rights on Streaming Platforms

Platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube allow AI-generated music, provided:

  • You hold valid commercial rights from the AI tool provider.
  • The music does not copy existing artists' copyrighted tracks or voices without permission.
  • You do not use bots or click farms to manipulate stream counts.
